: : With a muffler of less than 2 1/2, the exhaust may not be at maximum efficiency, but I wouldn't say doing it is worthless. Replacing the y pipe and the cat was the biggest gain I felt on my car even with the stock muffler and B-pipe. If the larger b-pipe with small muffler would be worthless then the y-pipe should be worthles by the same logic. : : I just replaced my stock b-pipe and muffler with 2 1/2 inch pipe and a 2000 muffler. Even though the 2000 muffler is less than 2 1/2 I can definitely notice a slight gain. I think it is a mater of capacity. Under acceleration exhaust pressure increases and having the capacity to absorb an increase in pressure. There are a number of issues to consider in exhaust including exhaust pulses and all sorts of things. I'm certainly no expert in the matter but I know that each change to my exhaust has yielded some benefit even with a muffler that is slightly smaller than the rest of the system. I might be able to squeeze out a bit more with a 2 1/2 muffler but I am super happy with the tone of the car right now. It has a nice sound without being obnoxious.
: If that muffler was installed with a Smooth transition for the diameter to get smaller than that would be better than having 2.5" piping meeting a wall with a 2" piping hole in the middle, b/c that would create a lot of turbulance that was making the power yield less.
