: The whole thing was pretty simple: disassemble, repainted the screen frame black, soldered/extended 8 wires, cut some plastic, cut the ashtray, epoxy, etc.. The pisser is that I just went on ebay to grab a pic and now they have a new model out that has compass plus inside/outside temp and it displays your car battery voltage. The voltage thing is a big deal because mine runs off of 4.5 volts so I kept the battery pack for now planning on wiring it in the future to run off the car's voltage. Right now I have the battery pack inside the ashtray (which is okay because I don't use it). : It would be real nice to have constant readings on the car battery. The ashtray actually works out nicely because you need to reach the reset switch on the back of the circuit board. The switch would be tricky to locate because it is a low-profile deal soldered securely in the circuit board. The gap behind the ashtray front gives you the access that an in-dash mount wouldn't. : okay, now for some HTML *crossing fingers* : : : Here's a link to that new unit that I think I might want to get.
: So a while back I picked up a digital compass on ebay. It was tricky to find a spot in the dash to imbed the screen because it's a pretty good size. I ended up cutting a section out of the center of the ashtray and mounting it close to flush with that. I was planning on doing the buttons differently, maybe use some small black ones mounted up higher, but then I noticed that the silver on the buttons complimented the silver trim of the Pioneer headunit nicely so I decided to keep the buttons and mount them off to the side.
